At NATby J, when we wanted to select a face behind our timepieces, it was important that she was an inspiring role model to youths out there and reflected the NATbyJ's ethos. NATbyJ's designer wanted a story that she could relate to as a girl growing up from a child to a young adult. NATbyJ chanced upon Elena who empowered her own life from a young age. In the first part of our interview with Elena, we learnt about her journey as a model.
- Tell me more about yourself?
I am Elena Cherina. I am from Russia and I moved out of Russia more than 10 years ago.
- How did you start modelling?
I was scouted twice. Once when I was studying Public Relations in the university in Russia and I was approached when I was walking along the streets. Another time when I was doing a work and travel stint in New York and was scouted there again. Hence I took it as a sign to give a modelling career a try. After my graduation, I was worked in the government for a year but quit to pursue a modelling career that took me around the world.

- What did you learn in modelling?
I learnt about working with different people with different cultures. I learnt to be more patient as there is always a lot of waiting around during photo shoots and video shoots. Growing up, I was quite a nerd in school so through modelling, I learnt that I like fashion and that I could use my creativity. Most importantly, I learnt to take risks.
